Jana Nayagan: Censor Board Clears Vijay's Film; Will EC Allow Its Release During TN Elections?

Thalapathy Vijay's much-anticipated final film Jana Nayagan has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Tuesday, bringing an end to months of uncertainty.

According to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, the film was censored in Mumbai by the Revising Committee, which has given its approval subject to clearance from the Election Commission, citing "some relevant political content" in the movie. The makers, however, are yet to issue an official confirmation.

in a post on X, he said, "Sources Say - #JanaNayagan was censored at Mumbai yesterday by the RC of CBFC who is said to have given the go ahead provided it is cleared by Election Commission as it has "some relevant political content."

The development comes as a major relief to millions of fans who have been eagerly awaiting Vijay's swansong before his full-time entry into politics. Initially slated for a grand Pongal release on January 10, the film had been mired in certification delays following objections raised by the CBFC over certain scenes deemed sensitive, particularly concerning religious sentiments.

The certification process had hit multiple roadblocks in recent weeks. Just last week, the scheduled screening for the Revising Committee on March 17 was cancelled after members from Hyderabad and Karnataka failed to arrive in Chennai. The Chennai CBFC office has been without a regional board member following the conclusion of S Ve Shekhar's tenure, further complicating matters.

Sources had earlier indicated that members Jeevitha Rajasekhar and Nagabharana eventually flew down late in the evening to review the film, though they reserved their opinion at that time .

The film's journey to certification has been nothing short of turbulent. After the Examining Committee recommended cuts in December 2025, which the makers claim to have implemented, an unexpected complaint from a committee member raised fresh concerns, leading to the matter being escalated to the Revising Committee. The legal battle that followed saw the producers approaching both the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court, before eventually withdrawing their plea to allow the standard review process to take its course.

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan had recently weighed in on the controversy, dismissing claims of political interference and asserting that the CBFC functions independently of government influence.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj and Priyamani, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. The political action drama follows a man who rises from grassroots to become the voice of the people .

With certification now secured, the film's release hinges on Election Commission clearance, particularly significant as Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), prepares to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April. Fans who have weathered months of uncertainty can finally look forward to witnessing their matinee idol's final act on the silver screen.
