How Malayalam Cinema Has Bounced Back In 2024
Just five months into the new year, Malayalam cinema has experienced an impressive resurgence.
After a string of unsuccessful films like 'Djinn,' 'Oh My Darling,' and 'Ramachandra Boss & Co' in 2023, Malayalam cinema has made a remarkable comeback in 2024 with hits like 'Perumalu,' 'Bramayugam,' and 'Aadujeevitham.' These films have revived theaters, not only in Kerala but also in neighboring states, thanks to their quality and engaging content.

The 2000s were challenging for Malayalam cinema, plagued by repetitive storytelling and a lack of creativity. This led to numerous imitative productions, creating a dark phase for the industry. Producers and directors frequently recycled the same storylines with the same actors, waiting for another hit to emerge.
However, Malayalam cinema has triumphantly turned the tide, unlike Bollywood, which still struggles. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Malayalam films surpassed the 500 crore mark. Each film brought something unique to the table: 'Perumalu' with action and drama, 'Bramayugam' with horror and thriller elements, and 'Aadujeevitham' with themes of adventure and survival.
"Unlike before, the audience is willing to come to theatres to watch films. They have realized that the experience of watching films in theatres and on OTT platforms is different. It is the merit of these films that attracted the public. They are aware of the film, its content, and quality from the trailer and promotion videos," says Siyad Kokker, a film producer and exhibitor.
Previously, Malayalees eagerly awaited the release of Rajinikanth's or Vijay's films to rush to theaters. However, 2024 has brought an unexpected twist, with audiences from other states now anticipating the Tamil and Telugu versions of Malayalam films.
