In a surprising revelation, veteran film journalist Cheyyar Balu has shared how actor Ajith Kumar was originally cast alongside Vijay in the 1997 hit Nerukku Ner, but chose to walk out of the project over creative differences.

Speaking in a recent interview with YouTube channel Aagayam Cinemas, Balu recalled that both Ajith and Vijay were initially set to play parallel leads in the Vasanth-directed film, produced by Mani Ratnam. However, Ajith reportedly felt that his role was less impactful compared to Vijay's and requested the director to make their characters equally significant.

When director Vasanth did not appear convinced, Ajith, valuing professional fairness, decided to step away from the project. This decision opened the door for a new face to step in. Balu revealed that filmmaker Mani Bharathi then suggested Sivakumar's eldest son, Saravanan. Although Sivakumar initially resisted, arguing that acting was an unstable career and his son already had a secure job, Vasanth's persistence finally convinced him. That young debutant went on to become Suriya-one of Tamil cinema's most celebrated stars today.

Balu used this anecdote to reflect on how the industry has always been shaped by unexpected turns of fate. He also weighed in on the broader issue of rumours and gossip surrounding celebrities. According to him, the current social media culture is merely a louder version of what existed in earlier decades.

Today, the same stories spread like wildfire on digital platforms," Balu noted, citing how baseless talk about actors' marriages or alleged affairs often overshadows their work. He criticized the trend of prying into personal lives, recalling incidents from the past involving Kamal Haasan, as well as more recent speculation around Vijay and his wife Sangeetha.

Balu emphasized that, while actors like Dhanush and Aishwarya openly announced their separation through an official statement, it remains inappropriate for media outlets to continue speculating about such private matters.
