Hema Committee Report Is An Eye Opener: Celina Jaitly

Celina Jaitly has voiced her concerns regarding the Hema Committee report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film. The report, which was submitted five years ago, has recently been made public, sparking widespread reactions. Celebrities are now speaking out against the harassment issues highlighted by the report.

The Hema Committee's findings were finally released on 19th August after numerous legal battles. However, only a controlled version of the report was made available to petitioners. Celina Jaitly expressed her frustration over this delay and the redaction of 63 pages from the original 295-page document due to privacy laws.

Impact of Redacted Report

Jaitly questioned whether the privacy of offenders should be protected when victims' privacy had been violated repeatedly. She emphasised that the report sheds light on the severe violations of women's rights to a safe work environment. "This report is an eye opener to the harsh realities of violations of women's right to something as basic as a clean and safe work environment," she stated.

When asked about her own experiences with harassment in Filmistan, Jaitly remarked that almost every woman in India faces some level of harassment in their profession. She pointed out that the Malayalam film industry's issues are particularly severe, highlighting the need for better protection for women across all sectors.

Legal Framework and Recommendations

According to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, every citizen has the right to life and dignity. Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code criminalises harassment, while The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 provides a framework for reporting and addressing workplace harassment incidents.

Jaitly called for all film industries, both regional and national, to collaborate on forming stringent policies endorsed by lawmakers. She believes these measures are essential for creating a safe working environment for women. "All film industries regional and national should come together to form stringent policies which in turn should be endorsed by law makers so that women can have a safe environment to work in," she said.

Need for Comprehensive Measures

Jaitly argued that not just Bollywood but all industries across India need similar reports due to increasing crimes against women. She suggested upgrading Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code to provide additional support with stringent outcomes, immediate action by authorities, and a 24-hour helpline as initial steps towards making women feel safe.

The release of the Hema Committee report has ignited discussions about sexual harassment in various industries. Celebrities like Celina Jaitly are using their platforms to advocate for stronger protections and more transparent reporting mechanisms to ensure safer workplaces for women nationwide.
