He Cheated While I Was Expecting, Reveals Om Puri’s First Wife

In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Seema Kapoor, the first wife of the late actor Om Puri, gave a heartfelt account of her tumultuous marriage. Seema, who is also Annu Kapoor's sister, talked openly about her relationship with the well-known actor and the heartache she went through as a result of his adultery, particularly when she was expecting their child.

Seema recalled that after Om started working on the movie City of Joy, their marriage appeared to be stable at first. He got to know journalist Nandita Puri while working on this project. Seema was not aware of their growing intimacy on set.

She later found out that a number of her close friends, such as Sudhir Mishra and Renu Saluja, were aware of the affair but decided not to inform her. They thought Om would eventually revert to his typical self and that it was just a phase.

Much later, when she was in Delhi, she discovered the truth. Om told her over the phone that he was seeing someone else. Seema claimed that she wanted to keep their marriage intact in spite of the betrayal and that she was pregnant at the time. Remaining optimistic, she went back to Mumbai, where Om seemed to act normally before departing once more for a shoot. Seema found a stack of love letters among his possessions. For her, it was a moment that altered everything.

She was heartbroken, but she refused to get a divorce. With a child on the way, she hoped to patch things up. However, things got worse. Seema explained how Om's drinking got out of control when Nandita would call him out loud in front of her. The psychological anguish became intolerable. Three months pregnant and feeling overburdened, she made the decision to leave Om Puri's home one evening.

She miscarried shortly after. Following that defeat, Om Puri used his secretary to send her 25,000 rupees. Seema declined to take the cash. She remembered the secretary telling her, "This ego is what is destroying you," but she insisted that it was self-respect, not ego.

Seema was still opposed to ending the marriage. However, she was unable to cope with the situation. Annu Kapoor, her brother, contemplated suing Om. She eventually got six lakh rupees in alimony, but the psychological scars were much more permanent.

In 1993, Om Puri married Nandita Puri. Ishaan is the name of the couple's son. Their own relationship became strained years later. Prior to his passing in 2017, Om Puri made contact with Seema. He apologized over the phone to her.
