Game Changer Review: Not Shankar's Best, But Better Than Indian 2

Game Changer marks Shankar's foray into Tollywood with a story that revolves around Ram Nandan (Ram Charan), an IAS officer with a temper who locks horns with the corrupt Chief Minister Bobbili Mopidevi (SJ Suryah). The narrative takes a personal turn as Ram faces off against his twin brother Charan, an IPS officer allied with Mopidevi. The film explores the themes of systemic corruption, familial bonds, and redemption.

Game Changer Review Not Shankar s Best But Better Than Indian 2

After the underwhelming reception of Indian 2, Shankar returns with Game Changer, a political thriller that promises grandeur but delivers mixed results. The film rides on Ram Charan's stellar performance and S Thaman's pulsating background score, but it falters in storytelling and execution.

The first half struggles to find its footing. A lackluster love track and ineffective comedy slow down the pace, though a well-executed interval block brings some much-needed intrigue. The second half starts on a high note with a gripping 20-minute flashback sequence that showcases Shankar's vintage style, evoking memories of his earlier masterpieces. Ram Charan shines in this segment as Appanna, delivering an emotional and compelling performance.

Unfortunately, the narrative loses momentum after the flashback. The film devolves into a predictable and melodramatic political drama, rehashing tropes from countless predecessors. While the visual grandeur and production values-especially in the songs-are commendable, the lack of originality in the script weighs the film down.

S Thaman's music is a mixed bag. While the background score elevates several scenes, it occasionally ventures into an overly loud territory. The supporting cast, including SJ Suryah and Samuthirakani, deliver decent performances, but their characters lack depth.

Highlights:

  • Ram Charan's standout performance in the flashback.
  • The 20-minute flashback sequence.
  • Thaman's BGM in intense moments.

Drawbacks:

  • Mediocre first half with a boring love track and ineffective comedy.
  • Over-reliance on clichés and predictable tropes.
  • Melodramatic and tiresome second half.

Game Changer is a middling political entertainer with flashes of brilliance. Ram Charan's exceptional performance, particularly in the flashback sequence, and Thaman's music are its saving graces. However, Shankar's underwhelming writing and reliance on formulaic storytelling fail to elevate the film.

While it's a step up from Indian 2, Game Changer doesn't mark the comeback Shankar fans were hoping for. It's an average outing that's worth a watch only for Ram Charan and the nostalgic glimpse of Shankar's former glory.
