Did You Know, Karuppu Was First Offered To Thalapathy Vijay and Not Suriya?
Suriya's Karuppu has emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. While the film’s success continues, director RJ Balaji has now shared that the project was first offered to Thalapathy Vijay, who eventually stepped away from the film for what Balaji described as valid reasons.
The filmmaker explained that Vijay’s decision not to proceed still played a role in shaping Karuppu. RJ Balaji said the discussions with Vijay helped refine the script and later opened the path for Suriya to step in. Vijay is currently active as an actor-turned-politician, which also weighed on the project timeline.

Karuppu casting choices and Vijay’s decision
RJ Balaji revealed that Karuppu was initially conceived with Thalapathy Vijay in mind. According to the director, the team entered talks when Vijay was planning the last film before a full political entry. The filmmaker shared these details during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.
"I narrated this film first to Vijay sir. This was supposed to be his last film (before his full-fledged political entry). We had two or three meetings, and he heard the script. Since it was supposed to be his last film, there were a lot of things that he had to consider. He had another option with H Vinoth (director of Jana Nayagan). He then asked me if he could inform me in a week. He then called me and mentioned certain reasons (to turn down the project), which I felt were justified," Balaji told The Hollywood Reporter India, as quoted by The Indian Express.
RJ Balaji said he accepted Vijay’s response without hesitation and appreciated the way the talks were handled. "I replied, 'Sir, I absolutely respect your decision.' By then, I had narrated two scripts to him. I had previously narrated another film. Both times, I narrated the subjects to him because he asked me if I had something for him. I felt that showed his great respect for my work and, probably, my creativity," the director added.
Once Vijay chose not to proceed, RJ Balaji moved the script to Suriya, which gave Karuppu its final lead. "That's how it became a Suriya film eventually. Despite his (Vijay's) not doing the film, the fact that he heard the subject landed me the opportunity to make this film. That's why I thanked him in the opening credits. After listening to my narration, he asked me the right questions, and those questions made my script better," the filmmaker concluded.
Karuppu now stands as a major success for Suriya and RJ Balaji, while also carrying Vijay’s early influence on the script. The film’s commercial performance, strong cast line-up and the director’s acknowledgment in the opening credits together underline how a project can evolve through changing casting decisions yet still connect with viewers.
