Dharmendra Dies At 89: PM Modi, President Murmu Lead Nation In Mourning Bollywood He-Man

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, who passed away in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89. Known as Hindi cinema's iconic "He-Man," Dharmendra leaves behind a legendary 65-year career featuring more than 300 films, from classics like Satyakam to Sholay.

In a message on X, President Murmu described Dharmendra's death as a major loss to Indian cinema. She said his decades-long contribution, unforgettable performances, and towering presence would continue to inspire generations of future artists. "My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers," she wrote.

Prime Minister Modi also paid tribute, calling Dharmendra an "iconic film personality" whose versatility and emotional depth resonated with millions. In his post on X, the Prime Minister said, "The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema... He was equally admired for his simplicity, humility, and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti."

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed anguish over the actor's passing, recalling his personal bond with Dharmendra and praising him as both a gifted performer and a humble human being. He said the film industry had suffered "a huge loss" with his death.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office also issued a tribute, describing Dharmendra as a brilliant star who defined the golden era of Indian cinema. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis noted his enduring impact - from romantic roles to powerful, intense characters - and expressed sympathy for the Deol family and fans worldwide.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called Dharmendra's death an "irreparable loss" to art and cinema. In his X post, he prayed for the actor's soul to attain eternal peace and for strength to his grieving family and supporters.

Dharmendra, who would have turned 90 on December 8, had been experiencing health issues for some time. He had been in and out of Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, where he was admitted for more than 10 days earlier this month. Although his condition showed improvement and he was moved back home for treatment, his health deteriorated again, leading to his demise. His family spokesperson confirmed the news.

The loss of Dharmendra - an actor whose charm, screen presence, and powerful performances shaped Indian cinema for generations - has left the country in mourning.
