Captain America: Brave New World Box Office Day 4: Anthony Mackie Starrer Movie Struggles At Indian Box Office
Captain America: Brave New World Box Office Day 4: Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World kicked off its cinematic journey with a strong start in North America, defying mixed reviews and word of mouth. Despite underwhelming performance in certain international markets, the superhero film grossed an impressive $88.5 million during its opening weekend from Friday to Sunday, according to Deadline. This made it one of the top-performing films during the long Presidents Day weekend, securing the fourth spot after Black Panther ($242M), Deadpool ($152M), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($120M).
Strong US Opening

The film, starring Anthony Mackie as the titular hero, resonated with a solid 5.7 million moviegoers in the U.S., contributing to its robust domestic weekend performance. Over the four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend, Captain America: Brave New World is expected to gross over $100 million, marking an impressive debut for the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Overseas Underperformance
While the domestic numbers were strong, the film's international performance left much to be desired. Brave New World earned $92.4 million from 52 overseas markets, bringing its worldwide total to $180.9 million. Despite these numbers, the movie fell short of expectations, with a projection of $110 million. A major factor behind this underperformance was the immense success of Ne Zha 2 in China, which overshadowed Captain America: Brave New World's presence in the region. The film still emerged as the top overseas grosser for the weekend in China, with $10.5 million in earnings.
Indian Box Office Struggles
In India, Captain America: Brave New World saw an even more disappointing performance, with an estimated $1.65 million in ticket sales. The underwhelming response in India highlights the shifting dynamics of global box office trends, especially considering the immense popularity of Marvel's superhero universe in the region.
Global Competition
This weekend's box office battle also saw Ne Zha 2 dominating the global stage, pulling in over $270 million in China alone, with a worldwide total of $1.63 billion. In comparison, Captain America: Brave New World managed to secure the second spot globally but could not match the success of the Chinese mega-blockbuster.
A Mixed Start for the MCU
While Captain America: Brave New World is still expected to do well in the coming weeks, the underperformance overseas may prompt Marvel Studios to reassess its strategies in international markets. It remains to be seen how the film will fare in the long run as more audiences in different regions engage with the new chapter of the iconic superhero saga.
