Cannes Film Festival: Indian Actress Anasuya Sengupta Wins 'Un Certain Regard' Best Performance Award

At the 77th Edition of Cannes Film Festival, Anasuya Sengupta just received the 'Un Certain Regard' Best Actress Award for her role in the movie 'The Shameless'.

She is the first Indian to win this award, as reported by Indian Express. She is also one among several Indians to be nominated for and win different awards at this edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

'The Shameless' is a movie directed by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov who has directed other works like 'Avé' and 'Light Thereafter'. He also posted on his instagram, congratulating Sengupta on her award and remaking that it was her first time acting as well.

The plot of the movie 'The Shameless' follows a prostitute 'Renuka', played by Anasuya Sengupta, who murders one of her clients in New Delhi before running away to a small town. There, she meets and falls in love with a woman 'Devika', played by Omara Shetty, and tries to figure out a way to escape her crimes while letting their forbidden flourish. It's a portrayal of a doomed relationship, where two women do the best they can when the whole world seems to be against them.

'Un Certain Regard', or 'A Certain Glance' when translated to English, is another awards competition that happens parallelly to the main competition for the 'Palme d'Or'. This year's 'Un Certain Regard' was chaired by Canadian actor and director Xavier Dolan. The jury included French-Senegalese screenwriter and director Maïmouna Doucouré, Moroccan director, screenwriter and producer Asmae El Moudir, German-Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps, and American film critic, director, and writer Todd McCarthy.

Winner of the 2024 'Un Certain Regard' Award was the movie 'Black Dog', directed by Guan Hu.
