Boycott Jaat: Why Tamil Nadu Is Calling For A Ban On Sunny Deol's Movie
Sunny Deol's action drama Jaat is at the center of a growing storm, as calls for a boycott in Tamil Nadu intensify. Directed by Gopichand Malineni and backed by Mythri Movie Makers and People's Media Factory, the film has faced sharp criticism for allegedly misrepresenting Tamil culture.
What is the Controversy? Jaffna Tiger Force Sparks Outrage

The controversy erupted over the film's depiction of a fictional terrorist outfit called the "Jaffna Tiger Force," which many viewers argue bears an unmistakable resemblance to the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The LTTE remains a highly sensitive topic in Tamil Nadu due to its historical and emotional connections to the Tamil community.
Social media has erupted with backlash, with the hashtag #BoycottJaatMovie trending across platforms. Critics claim the film's storyline disrespects Tamil sentiments and unfairly vilifies a community. In response, several theaters across Tamil Nadu have already pulled the film from their listings, and the pressure on multiplex chains to do the same is mounting.
Box Office Numbers: Decent Start, Uncertain Future
Despite the controversy, Jaat posted a strong five-day total of ₹47.5 crore in India. On its fifth day alone, it earned ₹7.25 crore. The film's overall India gross stands at ₹56.15 crore. Notably, it saw a high occupancy rate in Chennai, reportedly touching 94.25%.
However, the long-term prospects of the film now hang in the balance. Its first-day performance fell short of expectations, collecting just ₹9 crore against a projected ₹25 crore opening. While the extended weekend provided a much-needed boost, the controversy threatens to stall the momentum.
Threats and Theater Pullouts
The backlash has gone beyond online dissent. Some protestors have issued warnings against Sunny Deol and Gopichand Malineni entering Tamil Nadu, escalating tensions. While no official ban has been enforced, the voluntary withdrawal by several cinema halls has already started impacting regional revenue.
Could Controversy Drive Curiosity?
Ironically, the uproar may generate increased curiosity elsewhere. Films caught in controversy often attract wider attention, and Jaat may see more footfalls in other states as audiences flock to understand the commotion. Whether this translates into sustained box-office success remains to be seen.
With its future uncertain, Jaat finds itself caught in a political and cultural crossfire. The makers have yet to release an official statement addressing the controversy.
