Anurag Kashyap Quits Bollywood, Embraces South Cinema for Creative Freedom

Anurag Kashyap has officially confirmed his departure from Bollywood, citing its obsession with box office numbers and the lack of creative freedom. In a recent interview with *The Hindu*, he expressed frustration with the industry, calling it "too toxic" and dominated by the race to make ₹500 or ₹800 crore films. "The creative atmosphere is gone," he stated.

Reports suggest that Kashyap has relocated to Bengaluru and is keen on working in South Indian cinema for a more fulfilling creative experience. He has openly admired South filmmakers for their ability to experiment without excessive commercial pressure. In a previous conversation with *The Hollywood Reporter India*, he revealed feeling "disgusted" and "disappointed" with Bollywood's focus on profit margins. "Right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about 'how do we sell it?' So the joy of filmmaking is sucked out. That's why I want to move out. Literally, next year, I'm moving out of Mumbai," he had shared.

Kashyap's decision highlights his growing disillusionment with the industry's changing dynamics and his search for artistic freedom beyond Bollywood.

Anurag Kashyap will next be seen in *Dacoit*, where he takes on the role of a cop. The bilingual film, shot in Hindi and Telugu, features Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The official release date is yet to be announced.

Currently, Kashyap is promoting *Footage*, a Malayalam thriller directed by Saiju Sreedharan. Starring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok, the film originally premiered in August last year. Its Hindi version is set to release on March 7, 2025. Apart from promoting the film, Kashyap is also involved as a presenter.
