‘All We Imagine As Light’, Indian Film Nominated For Most Prestigious Award At Cannes

'All We Imagine As Light', an Indian film directed and written by Payal Kapadia, has been nominated to receive one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. The award is given by the Cannes Film Festival and is called the 'Palme d'Or'.

The cast of the movie were seen dancing on the red carpet as they made their way to the film's screening.

All We Imagine As Light

This is the first time an Indian film may win the main award of the Cannes Film Festival since 1946, when 'Neecha Nagar', a film by Chetan Anand, won the 'Grand Prix du Festival International du Film', the award that later evolved to become the 'Palme d'Or'.

'Palme d'Or', or 'Golden Palm' when translated to English, is an award given to the best film shown at the Cannes Film Festival for that year. This award has been given to the best films of the festival for over 60 years, having been created in 1954 when the festival's board of directors invited a bunch of jewellers to create a design for the award. The design was supposed to look like a plume, a tribute to the design of the coat of arms of the city of Cannes. The first ever film to receive this award was "Marty" in 1955, a movie directed by the late Delbert Mann.

This is not Payal Kapadia's first time at Cannes, as she already bagged the 2021 'Golden Eye' Award from the 74th Edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The 'Golden Eye' award is given to the best documentary film featured at the festival.

'All We Imagine As Light' is also not the only Indian film to win an award this year at Cannes. Chidananda S. Naik's short film 'Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know' won first place at the La Cinef award for short films. La Cinef aims to highlight the works made by amateur filmmakers from film schools.
