Akshay Kumar's 'Sky Force' Faces Backlash From Kodavas In Karnataka. Here's Why
The recent release of 'Sky Force,' featuring Akshay Kumar and drawing inspiration from the historical event of India's first airstrike at Pakistan's Sargodha airbase during the 1965 conflict, has stirred controversy.
This film, celebrating the heroics of Squadron Leader Devayya and Group Captain Ajay Ahuja's quest to unveil his fate, has been met with criticism from the Kodava community in Karnataka, reported India Today.

They express discontent over the inaccurate representation of Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya's ethnic background, arguing that the movie misidentifies him as Tamilian rather than a member of their Kodava heritage.
At the heart of the dispute is the portrayal of Squadron Leader Devayya, a revered figure within the Indian Air Force, who was posthumously honored with the Maha Vir Chakra for his valor.
Distress emerged among the Kodava community, known for their martial tradition and significant contributions to the Indian armed forces, when "Sky Force" seemingly overlooked these details.
The community, originating from Kodagu (formerly Coorg) in Karnataka, prides itself on its warrior ethos and historical figures like Field Marshal KM Cariappa and General KS Thimayya, both of whom shared their Kodava lineage.
Community Voices Concern Over Film's Representation
The uproar gained traction on social media, where individuals from the Kodava community voiced their concerns.
A viral video from Tanya, a lawyer and community member, questioned the filmmakers' decision to inaccurately depict Squadron Leader Devayya's background. This sentiment was echoed by an X user who criticized the film for altering Devayya's ethnicity, accusing the filmmakers of changing "his whole ethnicity and lineage."
Actor Gulshan Devaiah, also from the Kodava community, took to Instagram to shed light on Squadron Leader Devayya's legacy. He emphasised their shared Kodava heritage and sought to highlight the significance of this small, martial community within India's diverse fabric.
Devaiah's message underlined the importance of recognizing Squadron Leader Devayya's contributions and the correct representation of his background.
Despite the controversy, 'Sky Force' has seen substantial box office success, with an opening day collection of Rs 11.25 crore and widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
The movie's cast, including Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, Sara Ali Khan, and Nimrat Kaur, has been praised for their performances, underscoring the film's impact beyond its contentious portrayal of historical figures.
