Akhanda 2 Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad In Balakrishna's Film?

After a delay, Nandamuri Balakrishna's Akhanda 2 will make it to theatres with premieres on Thursday night.

Samyuktha, Aadhi Pinisetty, Harshaali Malhotra, Jagapathi Babu, Kabir Duhan Singh, Saswata Chatterjee, Ronson Vincent, Kriss Venugopal, Achyuth Kumar and others are part of the cast. The Telugu film has S Thaman's music, Tammiraju's editing and C. Ramprasad and Santosh Detake's cinematography.

The latest movie is the fourth reunion of after Simha, Legend, and Akhanda.

Akhanda 2, delayed but finally arriving in theatres with Thursday night premieres, attempts to recreate the fiery mass energy of the Balakrishna-Boyapati combo but only succeeds in flashes. The sequel picks up from where the first film left off, blending mythology, patriotism and Boyapati's trademark high-voltage drama. The plot centres on a biowarfare attack launched by the Tibetan army at the Maha Kumbh Mela, prompting the PM to deploy DRDO to find an antidote. Young scientist Janani (Harshaali Malhotra) succeeds, but the threat against her life brings Akhanda (Balakrishna) roaring back, fulfilling his promise of divine protection.

While the premise has potential, the film slips into a familiar, predictable pattern. A handful of mass sequences-the explosive intro, the interval, and a late second-half block-deliver the expected adrenaline rush. Balakrishna is undeniably in blazing form, bringing thunderous screen presence and elevating several ordinary moments through sheer force of personality. The mother-sentiment track and some well-staged action beats also land well.

However, much of the film feels outdated and excessively over-the-top, even by this duo's standards. S Thaman's BGM, once a strength, turns into noisy excess. Despite its moments, Akhanda 2 falls short of the iconic mass highs fans expect.

Venky Reviews: An Underwhelming Mass Entertainer with a few mass sequences that work but the rest disappoints!

The story continues from the first part with a typical Boyapati style treatment. A few mass sequences work, like the intro, interval block, and a block in the second half. However, the rest of the movie goes on a flat tone and feels outdated. The mass highs we expect from this combo are not as impactful. Though we know it will be over the top, this one goes way too overboard, diluting the impact.

Thaman's BGM, which was the highlight of the first part, only works partly here. The first film's BGM was loud but had an energy. This one is way too loud and feels like just noise in parts.

Though there are a few mass moments that work, this is not up to the level of the Boya-Balayya combo at all and disappoints. Below par!

This isn't a routine masala outing. It's a distinct divine mass film - logic and physics take a back seat, as the Akhanda character is not an ordinary man but an embodiment of Lord Shiva.

Thaman's music is a major strength, with the Haindavam song in the climax leaving a serene impact.

Overall, #Akhanda2 has the ingredients to strike at the box office.

From pre-interval to interval, Boyapati Srinu takes the audience into God mode, and #SSThaman delivers full-on mass music.
