Chalakudy Lok Sabha Constituency: Navigating Shifting Political Tides in Kerala
The Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency, established through the 2008 constituency re-delineation, emerged from the areas previously part of the now-abolished Mukundapuram Lok Sabha constituency. Historically, the constituency upheld the UDF's dominance until a strategic move by the left wing with actor Innocent shifted the power dynamics.
The Mukundapuram Constituency was notable for producing influential Congress leaders like P.C. Chacko, A.C. Jose, and K. Karunakaran, alongside CPI victors Balanandan and Lonappan Nampadan. It also saw prominent figures like Padmaja Venugopal and MM Lawrence fall short of securing wins.

In its inaugural 2009 Lok Sabha election, Chalakudy saw the UDF's KP Dhanapalan triumph over UP Joseph of the CPM with a substantial margin. However, 2014 marked a turn as the left's strategy to nominate Innocent as an independent candidate paid off, capturing the seat from the UDF.
The 2019 elections witnessed the UDF's comeback with Benny Behanan defeating Innocent, marking a significant victory with a 132,274-vote majority. AR Radhakrishnan of the BJP also made headlines by gathering over one lakh votes, a first for the party in this region.
The political landscape of Chalakudy continues to evolve, with the CPM presenting Professor C. Ravindranath, a revered figure and former minister, as their new face in the fray. Meanwhile, the NDA has entrusted the Chalakudy seat to BDJS, nominating KM Unnikrishnan as their candidate.
The constituency comprises seven assembly segments, spanning across Thrissur and Ernakulam districts, demonstrating a mixed political allegiance with LDF holding Kaypamangalam, Kodungallur, and Kunnathunad; while Chalakudy, Perumbavoor, Angamaly, and Aluva favor the UDF.
This electoral region's journey from its inception post the 2008 redistricting manoeuvre, through its varied political phases, highlights the transformative electoral dynamics within Chalakudy. From the UDF's initial control, the left's intermittent victories, to the recent strategies both blocs are employing, Chalakudy's political narrative remains a focal point of interest.
As the constituency navigates through another election cycle, the anticipation around its outcome reflects the ever-changing nature of its political landscape.
