Yercaud Bus Accident: Several Killed, Over 30 Injured

Several people were killed and over 30 injured in a bus accident at the Yercaud Ghat road in Salem district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Reports in the Tamil media have claimed that at least six people have lost their lives in the accident that occurred on the 11th hairpin bend. The deceased included a boy and four killed on the spot, according to a report in UNI.

Around 40 individuals were aboard the bus when the driver lost control negotiating a bend, leading to a collision with a wall. As a result, the bus overturned and plunged into a 50-foot-deep gorge, coming to rest upside down.

A few travellers have been critically injured and the death toll is likely to increase.

Upon hearing the news, senior district authorities, accompanied by law enforcement and emergency personnel, arrived at the spot. Injured individuals were transported to the Salem government hospital for urgent medical attention, while deceased victims were sent to the hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The incident caused disruptions to traffic along the busy ghat road, which is witnessing huge travellers during the summer vacation.

Yercaud, experiencing an influx of tourists seeking respite from the scorching heat wave prevailing across the state, saw an increase in visitors.
