Will Chennai Get Rains Today? Get Weather Update As 10 TN Dists On Yellow Alert Today

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for more than ten districts in Tamil Nadu, predicting heavy rainfall for Wednesday. The alert comes as weather systems brewing over the Bay of Bengal are set to influence the state's climate.

Districts including Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, and the coastal regions of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal are expected to receive significant precipitation. The RMC has also placed Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar districts under the yellow alert, cautioning residents of isolated heavy rains.

The forecast is attributed to specific atmospheric conditions. According to the RMC, an upper air cyclonic circulation is currently situated over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast. Furthermore, a trough, or an elongated area of low pressure, extends from this system across Tamil Nadu to Coastal Karnataka.

"This is leading to favourable conditions for widespread rainfall in the interior and southern parts of the state," a meteorological official stated.

In a related development, the cyclonic storm 'Shakhti,' which had formed over the Arabian Sea, has significantly weakened. As of Tuesday morning, the system was downgraded to a depression and is expected to dissipate further into a well-marked low-pressure area. Officials confirmed that this system poses no threat to the Indian mainland.

Meanwhile, a gradual drop in maximum temperatures is anticipated across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next few days. The mercury is expected to fall by 2-3°C at a few locations from Wednesday through Saturday, providing relief from the recent warmth.

Chennai Weather Outlook:

The capital city, Chennai, is likely to experience a relatively milder weather pattern. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 34°C, with a minimum settling between 26-27°C. While the heavy rain alert is not in effect for the metropolis, residents can anticipate one or two spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning in some areas.

Authorities have advised citizens in the alerted districts to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and exercise caution while traveling.
