Who Is Marie Wilson? The New Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu

N Marie Wilson, first-time MLA from Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, is the new Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu. He took oath on Thursday along with 22 others in Vijay's TVK cabinet.

The new government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, also set up a cabinet-level Artificial Intelligence department, making Tamil Nadu the second state after Keralam with such a dedicated AI wing. This move came alongside allocation of major portfolios, including Finance, Revenue and Social Welfare.

Vijay retained several core areas, including Home, Police, Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply. The Chief Minister also kept Special Initiatives, Poverty Alleviation and Rural Indebtedness, signalling close control over law, welfare and infrastructure, while delegating other sectors to senior TVK leaders.

The Women Welfare responsibilities, earlier attached to the Chief Minister’s office, were moved to K Jegadeshwari. Jegadeshwari took charge as Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, giving a single department oversight of schemes involving women, social justice and support programmes.

Former state minister KA Sengottaiyan, now TVK MLA from Gobichettipalayam, received the Revenue department. Sengottaiyan became responsible for Revenue, District Revenue Establishment, Deputy Collectors, Disaster Management, Boodhan, Gramadhan and Legislative Assembly matters, placing land and disaster issues under one senior political figure.

As Finance Minister, Wilson was tasked with overseeing Finance, Pensions and Pensionary Benefits, along with Planning & Development. The appointment placed a newcomer in charge of budgeting, long-term economic planning and the state’s pension systems, soon after Wilson’s first electoral success.

Wilson won the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar seat by defeating DMK candidate J. John Ebenezer. Wilson secured 97800 votes, while J. John Ebenezer received 48132 votes. In 2021, Ebenezer J J alias John Ebenezer J of DMK had captured this constituency, beating Raajesh R S of AIADMK by 42,479 votes.

Who Is N Marie Wilson?

Wilson's entry into politics came after an extensive career in educational administration. Since January 2011, he had been serving as the managing director of Jeppiaar Institute of Technology in Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram district, while also functioning as the managing trustee of the Jeppiaar Remibai Educational Trust.

Earlier, Wilson was the founder-director of Jeppiaar Engineering College from 2001 to 2010 and headed Jeppiaar International School in the same capacity between 2003 and 2010. He also served as Director of JIT Global Infosystems Pvt. Ltd and founder-director of JIT Sports Academy, reflecting his involvement across the fields of education, technology and sports.

Wilson joined TVK alongside a group of prominent figures that included former IRS officer K.G. Arunraj, former judicial officer C. Subash, and former MLAs R. Rajalakshmi, S. David Selvan and Dr. A. Sridharan. The move marked the Jeppiaar family's first direct participation in electoral politics since Col. Dr. Jeppiaar's unsuccessful contest from T. Nagar in the 1989 Tamil Nadu Assembly election on the Janaki faction ticket.

Within the party, Wilson was also regarded as an important organisational figure. He was credited with playing a key role in facilitating Vijay's speech at Jeppiaar Institute of Technology during a closed-door indoor meeting, which became TVK's first such gathering after the Karur stampede incident of 27 September 2025.

Wilson’s candidacy for Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar was formally confirmed when TVK released its complete list for all 234 Assembly seats on 29–30 March 2026. The subsequent win and rapid elevation to the Finance portfolio placed Wilson among the most visible first-term ministers in the new administration.
