When Will Schools In Chennai & Across Tamil Nadu Reopen? Dates And Details For Classes 1 To 12
After the vacation, the schools in Tamil Nadu for classes 1 to 12 reopen on June 6, the school education department said.
The 2024 academic year holds particular significance as the state government may implement its new education policy, drafted by a committee led by Justice D Murugesan. The committee has recommended several key changes, including a common entry age for schools, play-based learning in kindergarten sections (LKG and UKG), and considering Class XI and XII scores for college admissions.

Students from government schools will receive free textbooks on the first day of school. "We have printed 2.7 crore free textbooks for students in government and government-aided schools. These books have been delivered to nodal points in the districts and will be transported to schools by May 31," The Times of India quoted an official from the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation as saying.
The corporation has also launched the sale of textbooks for private schools and individuals, printing 1.3 crore copies for sale this year. The official added that free kits, including school bags, sandals, geometry boxes, crayons, boots, and sweaters, will be distributed in July.
"Schools have started preparations to welcome students after the summer holidays. "We have started painting the classrooms and cleaning the campus anticipating the reopening in the first week of June. We also completed Class XI admissions," GJ Manohar, principal of MCC Higher Secondary School in Chetpet, told the daily.
R Prabudoss, headmaster of Govt Model Higher Secondary School in MMDA Colony, confirmed that government schools will distribute books to students on the first day of reopening.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations declared the Class 12 exam results for 2024 on May 6. This year, 94.56 per cent of students successfully passed, marking a notable increase from last year's pass rate of 94.03 per cent.
The class 10 results were announced on May 10. The overall pass rate stands at an impressive 91.55%, with 8,18,743 candidates successfully clearing the examination.
