What's Next For Annamalai If He Steps Down As Tamil Nadu BJP President?
In the last few days, there have been lots of rumours about K Annamalai stepping down as the BJP chief of Tamil Nadu.
As the AIADMK gets closer to the BJP ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections 2026, the regional party has reportedly laid a condition that Annamalai should be removed from the position in order to return to the NDA alliance.

The Sticking Point: Annamalai's Leadership
The AIADMK's discontent stems from Annamalai's sharp criticism of Dravidian stalwarts like C.N. Annadurai and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. His remarks during the BJP's aggressive "En Mann, En Makkal" (My Land, My People) yatra reportedly irked the regional party, leading to the alliance's collapse. Now, with elections approaching, the AIADMK is reportedly unwilling to reconcile unless the BJP replaces him.
BJP's Tough Choice: Alliance or Annamalai?
Political analyst Yashwant Deshmukh, founder of C-Voter, told The New Indian Express that the BJP is unlikely to sideline Annamalai merely to placate the AIADMK. "There is no leader other than him in the southern state, who appears in the popularity chart. The party lost 25 years in momentum due to the unfortunate death of former union minister P Rangarajan Kumaramangalam in August 2000. Superstar Rajnikanth was a non-starter politically for the party. They have got someone (Annamalai) worth pitching for after a long time.

Deshmukh suggested a middle path: "They may offer him a promotion as a central minister and appoint a more alliance-friendly state chief." This could balance the BJP's need for a strong local face while easing tensions with the AIADMK.
However, Annamalai remained diplomatic, stating that he would abide by the decisions of the BJP high command. He told the English daily: "As I said in Delhi, there will be no trouble for anyone because of me. I am a party worker, and the party's decision is final,"
What Lies Ahead?
With the AIADMK-BJP negotiations in flux, the BJP faces a critical choice-retain its most visible Tamil Nadu leader or compromise to secure an alliance that could bolster its electoral prospects. As talks continue, all eyes are on whether the two parties can bridge their differences or if Annamalai's rise will come at the cost of a key partnership.
