As per weather blogger Pradeep John, the hill stations will witness severe cold weather. Below is a detailed analysis of the temperature ranges in various locations across the region, alongside insights into what this weather means for the region.

Hill Stations Experience Sharp Temperature Drops
Munnar and Idukki (Kerala):
Temperature Range: 3°C to 6°C.
- Known for its tea plantations and rolling hills, Munnar and Idukki are among the coldest spots this winter. The crisp and foggy mornings are drawing tourists who enjoy the serene landscapes.
Arakku Valley (Andhra Pradesh): Temperature Range: 4°C to 7°C.
- The picturesque Arakku Valley is enduring frigid mornings and evenings, making it a hotspot for winter enthusiasts.
Ooty and Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu): Temperature Range: 6°C to 9°C.
- Popularly known as the Queen of Hill Stations, Ooty is witnessing a cold spell ideal for tourists seeking a winter retreat.
Kodaikanal and Dindigul (Tamil Nadu): Temperature Range: 6°C to 10°C.
- The Princess of Hill Stations offers chilly nights and pleasant afternoons, perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
Coonoor, Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu): Temperature Range: 9°C to 10°C.
- Surrounded by lush tea estates, Coonoor is experiencing a cool ambiance, attracting visitors for its tranquil atmosphere.
Other Hill Stations:
- Yercaud (Salem): 10°C to 12°C.
- Chikmagaluru (Karnataka): 11°C to 13°C.

These locations are enjoying typical winter conditions with cold mornings and evenings.

- Horsley Hills (Madanapalle): 12°C to 15°C.
- Hosur and Bengaluru: 13°C to 15°C - Pleasant weather with light breezes.
Plains Feel the Winter Chill Too
Even the plains, typically warmer during this time of year, are experiencing a noticeable drop in temperatures:
- Tiruppur, Dharmapuri, and Salem: 17°C to 18°C - Mildly chilly conditions for this season.
- Vellore, Erode, and Coimbatore: 18°C - Cool mornings and evenings.
- Chennai: 21°C - A pleasant, albeit less chilly, coastal winter.
Northeast Monsoon Update
The northeast monsoon, which typically concludes by December, is still active. The next spell of rains is forecasted to commence around January 10, particularly along the Tamil Nadu coast. While the current clear skies contribute to cooler nights, the arrival of rains will likely raise minimum temperatures. This is because cloud cover during rainy weather traps heat, preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere at night.
The ongoing cold spell offers a rare opportunity for South Indians to enjoy winter's full glory, with temperatures rivaling those in the northern regions. Residents and travelers are making the most of this weather, engaging in winter activities and basking in the chill before the impending rains change the climate dynamic.
