Water Level In Mettur Dam On July 31: Check Water Level In Tamil Nadu Dams Today

The Mettur Dam, on Tuesday evening, reached a critical milestone, achieving its full capacity by crossing 120 feet. This marked a dramatic change in a short span, as just two weeks prior, the water level stood at a mere 44.62 feet.

The surge in water levels was primarily attributed to the substantial release of water from the Krishna Raja Sagara and Kabini dams, which themselves had neared their full levels of 124.800 feet and 64.200 feet, respectively.

The surge began on July 14 when Karnataka started releasing water into the Cauvery River at an initial rate of 20,000 cusecs, later increasing to 80,000 cusecs. This influx played a pivotal role in elevating the water levels of the Mettur Dam to its maximum capacity.

Tamil Nadu is home to 116 large dams, with 78 managed by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD). These structures are vital for ensuring a stable supply of water for various needs, including drinking, agriculture, and electricity generation.

Among these, the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River stands out as a crucial asset, not just for irrigation but also for its role in power generation and overall water management. The Vaigai Dam in the Western Ghats similarly plays a significant role in the region's agricultural and energy sectors.
