TVK Office Set Ablaze in Srirangam as Tamil Nadu Braces for Election Results

Tensions have flared in Tamil Nadu ahead of assembly election results following an overnight arson attack on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) local office. The incident, which occurred in Srirangam on Thursday night, comes as the state braces for the 4 May vote count.

CCTV Tracks Suspects

Surveillance footage recovered from the vicinity shows two unidentified men approaching the premises under the cover of darkness. The pair were seen entering the office briefly before fleeing the scene. By Friday morning, supporters arrived to find the building charred and campaign materials destroyed. Portraits and posters of the party's founder, the actor-turned-politician Vijay, had been torn and defaced.

Local authorities confirmed that while the building sustained fire damage, no injuries were reported.

Despite the damage, the police are yet to register a formal First Information Report (FIR), noting that the TVK leadership has not yet filed an official complaint regarding the vandalism.

A High-Stakes Debut

The timing of the attack is particularly sensitive. Tamil Nadu's political landscape is currently on edge following a record-breaking 85.14% voter turnout during the single-phase polls on 23 April.

Initial exit polls suggest that Vijay's TVK is poised for a significant breakthrough, potentially disrupting the long-standing duopoly of the state's traditional heavyweights. The projections vary, but the outlook remains bullish for the newcomer:

Axis My India: Projects a massive debut of 98-120 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

Kamakhya Analytics: Forecasts a solid presence with 67-81 seats.

Today's Chanakya: Offers a more conservative estimate of 52-74 seats.

In response to the escalating friction, TVK candidate N Marie Wilson confirmed that party chief Vijay has issued strict directives to all nominees. Candidates have been ordered to arrive at counting centres at dawn on 4 May and maintain a "constant vigil" until the final certificate of election is issued.

The party has emphasised the need for rigorous monitoring to ensure the integrity of the process, particularly in closely contested constituencies where the TVK is expected to challenge established incumbents. As the state waits for Tuesday's tally, the Srirangam incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile atmosphere surrounding this landmark election.
