TVK Chief Vijay To Take Oath As Tamil Nadu CM Today At 10 AM, First Non-DMK-AIADMK CM Since 1967

After days of intense political negotiations, multiple meetings with the Governor and dramatic uncertainty over alliance numbers, actor-turned-politician Vijay is finally set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 10 AM on Sunday.

The journey to power for Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been anything but straightforward. What began as a historic electoral breakthrough soon transformed into a high-stakes political battle for majority support in the 234-member Assembly.

TVK's Historic Election Win Shakes Tamil Nadu Politics

The election results declared on Monday dramatically altered Tamil Nadu's political landscape. Vijay's TVK, contesting its first Assembly election after being launched just two years ago, emerged as the single-largest force with 108 seats.

The victory broke the dominance that the DMK and AIADMK had maintained over the state's politics for nearly six decades and stunned political observers across the country.

Despite the massive win, the party fell 10 seats short of the majority mark of 118, triggering frantic efforts to secure support from smaller parties and independents.

Soon after the results, the Congress extended support with its five MLAs. Armed with the backing, Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday and staked claim to form the government. However, the Governor advised him to demonstrate additional support before being invited to power.

Coalition Talks Intensified As Majority Remained Out Of Reach

Following the Governor's response, hectic negotiations continued over the next few days. The CPI and CPI(M), both allies of the DMK during the elections, agreed to support Vijay, adding four MLAs to the coalition tally.

Since Vijay had won from two constituencies, the effective strength of the alliance stood at 116 MLAs, still two short of the required majority.

At the same time, reports surfaced suggesting that the DMK and AIADMK were exploring the possibility of joining hands to form an alternative government. The speculation created fresh uncertainty and raised concerns within the TVK camp.

The party then intensified talks with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) led by Thol Thirumavalavan. After prolonged discussions, the breakthrough finally came on Saturday evening when the VCK announced unconditional support from its two MLAs, taking Vijay's coalition to the crucial figure of 118.

The numbers improved further soon after when the Indian Union Muslim League, another constituent of the DMK-led alliance, also extended support, pushing the tally to 120 MLAs.

Governor Clears Vijay To Form Government

With support letters from alliance partners secured, Vijay once again met Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Saturday evening and successfully demonstrated majority backing.

The TVK leadership then pushed for an immediate swearing-in ceremony, a request that was accepted by the Governor.

"The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Nehru Stadium, Chennai on 10th May 2026 at 10 AM," the Lok Bhavan said in a statement, adding that Vijay will have to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly by Wednesday.

The ceremony at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is expected to witness the presence of several prominent political leaders from across the country. Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is among the leaders expected to attend.

Vijay's rise from cinema superstar to Chief Minister marks one of the most dramatic political transformations in recent Tamil Nadu history.

The TVK's emergence has fundamentally reshaped the state's political equations and opened the door to a new era in Tamil Nadu politics.
