TN Assembly Sees Heated Exchange As CM Stalin Challenges Palaniswami

The Tamil Nadu Assembly turned into a battleground on March 20, 2025, as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami engaged in a fiery exchange over four murders that occurred in the state on March 19. The debate took a dramatic turn when Mr. Stalin challenged Mr. Palaniswami to stay back and listen to his response "if he had the guts" while the AIADMK leader was preparing to walk out with his party MLAs.

The confrontation began when Mr. Palaniswami attempted to bring up the issue after the question hour. Speaker Appavu stated that the matter could be discussed on another day, as it had only been brought to his notice at 9:25 a.m. However, Mr. Palaniswami insisted that the urgency of the situation warranted immediate discussion. Leader of the House Duraimurugan argued that ministers should be given adequate time to respond to concerns raised in the Assembly. Despite this, Mr. Stalin directed the Speaker to allow the discussion.

During his address, Mr. Palaniswami criticized the government's handling of law and order and accused the Speaker of suppressing the Opposition's voice. Minister Duraimurugan intervened, reminding him to focus solely on the issue at hand. However, Mr. Palaniswami and AIADMK MLAs walked out, alleging that they were being denied the opportunity to speak.

Responding to the walkout, Mr. Stalin referenced incidents that took place under the AIADMK regime, including the police firing in Thoothukudi that resulted in 14 deaths and the custodial deaths in Sathankulam. He remarked that Mr. Palaniswami had chosen to leave because he did not want to hear his response in detail.

Addressing concerns about rising crime, Mr. Stalin asserted that social media exaggerations had fueled the perception of worsening law and order. He cited statistics showing that criminal incidents and murders had significantly declined since the DMK government assumed office in 2021.

Regarding a recent murder in Erode, Mr. Stalin explained that the victim, John alias Chanakya, was a history-sheeter who was killed in retaliation for a previous crime. The police tracked down the suspects and fired at them when they attempted to attack officers. Four of the accused were injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Coimbatore.
