Tiruppur Murder: What Led To Killing Of Cop Shanmugavel At AIADMK MLA-Owned Farm?

In a shocking incident, a special sub-inspector named Shanmugavel was hacked to death while investigating a dispute between a father and his sons. The incident occurred in the Gudimangalam Sikanuthu area of Tiruppur district.

He was murdered at a farm owned by AIADMK MLA Mahendran The deceased, Shanmugavel (52), was a special sub-inspector at the Gudimangalam police station.

Mahendran is an MLA from the Madathukulam constituency and the Tiruppur suburban district secretary. He was also the Pollachi MLA from 2014-19.

The dispute involved a father named Moorthy from Vedansanthur, Dindigul district, and his two sons, Thangapandian and Manikandan, who were working on Mahendran's farm. The three had been drinking alcohol on the night of the incident and got into an argument, which escalated into a violent conflict with weapons, according to a report in Oneindia Tamil.

Police received a tip-off about the altercation via the control room number 100. Shanmugavel was dispatched to investigate and tried to intervene and mediate the dispute. However, the father and sons ignored his pleas and brutally attacked him. Shanmugavel died on the spot.

The murder of a police officer in uniform, that too at a sitting MLA's farm, has caused a great deal of shock. Five special teams have been formed to apprehend Moorthy and his sons, who are currently absconding.

Senior police officials, including West Zone IG Senthil and Coimbatore Range DIG Sasimohan, are inspecting the crime scene. MLA Mahendran also visited his farm and spoke with the police. The police questioned him about the background of the three individuals and the nature of the dispute.

What AIADMK MLA Says About The Murder?

In his statement, Mahendran said he was unaware of the murder and had no connection to it. He stated that he would fully cooperate with the police investigation. The police are continuing their investigation at his farm.

He met the victim's family and expressed his deepest condolences. "I request the Tamil Nadu government to arrest the culprits involved in this soon and give them severe punishment," he said in a post on X. He urged the DMK government to give a job to a family member of the deceased Shanmugavel.

However, Tamil Nadu CM has announced Rs 1 crore compensation for his family.
