The Timeless Connection Between Srivilliputhur Andal Temple-Tirupati Lord Balaji Temple
The Srivilliputhur Andal Temple in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district holds a special place in the Vaishnavite tradition. Known for its exquisite garlands, the temple continues a centuries-old custom of adorning deities in prominent Vaishnavite temples like Tirupati, Srirangam, and Alagar Kovil with its handcrafted floral offerings.
During the grand Brahmotsavam festival held at the Tirupati Venkateswara Temple in the Tamil month of Purattasi, the garlands crafted at Srivilliputhur Andal Temple take center stage, especially for the Garuda Seva, one of the festival's most significant events.

These garlands are meticulously assembled with devotion at the Andal Temple, blessed with special prayers and pujas, and ceremoniously presented to Andal amidst music and chants. Encased with care, the garlands are then transported to Tirupati, accompanied by fervent chants of "Govinda, Govinda," with the temple elephant Jayamalika adding to the sanctity of the moment.
500 Year Old Tradition
The tradition, which began over 500 years ago, initially saw garlands made from vetiver-a durable material suited for long journeys-being transported on bullock carts. Over time, the process evolved with advancements in transportation, and since 2000, dedicated vehicles have ensured the garlands' safe arrival at Tirupati. Along with the floral garlands, two iconic leaf-crafted parrots from Srivilliputhur are also sent to Tirumala.
Upon reaching Tirupati, the garlands are housed at the Jeeyar Mutt and offered special prayers before being adorned on Lord Venkateswara for the Garuda Seva. The deity, draped in the Andal Mala, is paraded through the temple streets in a grand procession, drawing thousands of devotees.
As part of this sacred exchange, the Tirupati temple sends silk garments, fabrics, and ceremonial white umbrellas used in adorning Lord Venkateswara back to the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple. These items are offered to Andal the Friday following the Brahmotsavam during a special ceremony, accompanied by prayers and celebrations. This deeply revered exchange reinforces the spiritual bond between the two temples, with devotees gathering in large numbers to seek Andal's blessings and witness this divine tradition.
