Thanjavur-Kumbakonam-Vikravandi Highway: Route, Completion Date, Budget, Status Of NH 36

Good news is on the horizon for travelers in Tamil Nadu, as the highly anticipated Thanjavur-Kumbakonam-Vikravandi Highway is nearing completion. This critical infrastructure project is set to boost connectivity across the delta region, enhancing travel and economic opportunities in multiple cities.

Launch Date

Initially slated for completion in September 2020, the highway project faced significant delays due to Cyclone Gaja, the COVID-19 pandemic, and issues related to land acquisition. However, progress has resumed, and the highway is now expected to be fully operational by the end of this year.

Route and Cities Covered

The highway spans 164 kilometers, starting at Vikravandi and extending to Manamadurai. It passes through several key cities, including Panruti, Vadalur, Anaikkarai, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Thiruppathur, and Sivagangai. This route will provide a much-needed boost to regional transportation, connecting these urban hubs more efficiently.

Project Features

The project includes two key sections: the four-lane Cholapuram-Thanjavur stretch, which runs for 48 kilometers, and the Sethiyathope-Cholapuram section, which covers around 50 kilometers. The Cholapuram-Thanjavur section features two bypasses, four major bridges, and 15 vehicular underpasses (VUPs) and flyovers, while the Sethiyathope-Cholapuram stretch includes three bypasses, four major bridges, and 20 VUPs/flyovers.

Current Status

The construction of the Thanjavur-Cholapuram and Cholapuram-Sethiyathoppu stretches is nearly complete, with only about five percent of the work remaining. The highway is expected to be ready for use by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone for transportation infrastructure in the region.

Budget

The total cost of the Vikravandi-Kumbakonam-Thanjavur bypass project is Rs 4,730 crore, making it a major investment in Tamil Nadu's road network and a key driver of economic development in the delta region.
