Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Will Chennai Get Relief From Rains?

Tamil Nadu has been grappling with heavy rainfall over the past few days due to Cyclone Fengal, leading to widespread damage and loss of life. At least 12 people have died in rain-related incidents, including seven members of a family who tragically lost their lives in a landslide in Tiruvannamalai.

Chennai and its surrounding regions have also been affected by the incessant downpour. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), residents of Chennai can expect light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. A yellow alert has been issued for seven districts-Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tirupattur-for Wednesday.

The RMC, in its latest bulletin, reported that the remnant of Cyclone Fengal had moved west-northwestwards, transitioning into a well-marked low-pressure area over North Interior Tamil Nadu.

By December 3, 2024, the system had shifted to Coastal Karnataka and adjoining regions of the east-central Arabian Sea, with its associated cyclonic circulation extending to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is expected to continue moving west-northwestward over the Arabian Sea in the next two days.

Meanwhile, weather blogger R. Pradeep John highlighted that Tiruvallur district has recorded the highest rainfall in the last three days, with an impressive 307.5 mm of precipitation.

The heavy rains have disrupted daily life, and authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant as the state continues to face the impact of the weather system.
