Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Chennai To Get Light Rains, 3 Dists To Get Heavy Downpour During Pongal Festival
The Tamil Nadu weather forecast indicates a mix of light to heavy rains across the state during the Pongal harvest festival, bringing cheer to some and caution to others.
RMC Weather Alert

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted continued light to moderate rains in the KTCC region (Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu), while South Tamil Nadu districts like Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari are set to receive heavy rainfall.
A press release from the RMC stated, "Light to moderate rain is likely at many places over South Tamil Nadu and isolated areas in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rain is expected in isolated areas of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari."
The weather system behind these rains, attributed to an upper-air circulation (UAC), is expected to persist until January 16. While the rains in the KTCC region are being described as pleasant and unlikely to disrupt harvest activities, areas in South Tamil Nadu may need to remain alert to potential impacts from the heavy downpour.

On Sunday, Karur Paramathi recorded the highest maximum temperature of 33°C, while Thirupattur registered the lowest minimum temperature of 19.2°C among plains in the region.
Tamil Nadu Weather Blogger's Update
Weather bloggers have also weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the enjoyable weather in the KTCC region. "Light to moderate rains will continue till Monday morning, with no harm to harvests. However, heavy rains on January 14-15 are expected to focus on regions like the Manjolai hill stations and Coutrallam," one blogger noted. They also advised residents celebrating Pongal to ensure that traditional kolams are designed to withstand the rain.
Looking ahead, meteorologists are monitoring another potential rain system expected to impact Tamil Nadu around January 19, which could bring heavier showers. Residents are advised to stay updated on forecasts and prepare for the possibility of more intense rainfall.
