Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Chennai To Get Heavy Rains Tonight, Yellow Alert For Several Districts

Chennai braces for another bout of heavy rainfall tonight as weather forecasts indicate a return of precipitation to the Tamil Nadu capital.

R Pradeep John (PJ), a well-known weather predictor on social media, has announced that Chennai, along with several other districts, is likely to experience heavy rains this Wednesday evening and into the night.

In a post he shared on Tuesday evening on X, he said, "Tomorrow evening / night it will even more semma thunderstorm for Chennai & Surroundings aka KTCC, Vellore Ranipet, Thriuvannamalai, Cuddalore, Villpuram, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Bangalore, Tirupattur, Erode etc. In Simple, North TN will rock tomorrow too. So KTCC people, will update once the rains starts tomorrow. Note these are thunderstorms, the rainfall differs from place to place."

Even the Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted moderate rains for Chennai for next 48 hours. In a statement, the weather agency said, "Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum temperature is likely to be 36-37°C and Minimum temperature is likely to be 26-27°C.

As per the latest reports, the rains have started lashing in parts of Chennai already.

Yellow Alert

The weather agency has given a yellow alert indicating heavy rainsfall in several districts for the next 48 hours. Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni districts, Nilgiris, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai districts and Puducherry are predicted to get heavy rains today.

Isolated places over ghat areas of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul and Theni districts, Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur and Tiruchirappalli
districts tomorrow.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) report for the 24-hour period ending at 08:30 am today, the maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal were generally near normal to slightly above normal.

The highest maximum temperature was recorded at Karur Paramathi, reaching 38.0°C. Across the plains of Interior Tamil Nadu, temperatures ranged from 33-38°C, while Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal experienced temperatures between 31-36°C. In the hilly areas, temperatures ranged from 20°C to 27°C.
