Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Hot Spell Hits State As Karur Tops At 44.5°C, Chennai Boils At 40.7°C

Several districts in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday saw temperatures soar above 40.0°C, with Karur reaching a scorching maximum of 44.5°C.

In particular, Chennai reportedly recorded a temperature of 40.7°C today, as noted by R Pradeep John (PJ), a weather forecaster who regularly updates weather information on his Twitter account, Tamil Nadu Weather Man.

Early reports indicate that, besides Karur, Vellore (43.7°C), Erode (43.6°C), Trichy (43.1°C), and Tiruttani (42.5°C) also experienced exceptionally high temperatures.

Tuesday Weather

12 districts in Tamil Nadu recorded over 40.0°C on Tuesday with Karur registering a maximum temperature at 42.5°C, according to the Regional Meteorological Department.

During the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am today, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu were generally higher than usual, ranging from 2 to 4°C above normal in several areas of the interior plains. Coastal regions of the state experienced temperatures ranging from normal to slightly above normal (1-3°C), while Puducherry and Karaikal areas saw temperatures near normal.

The highest maximum temperature was recorded at Karur Paramathi: 42.5°C (an increase of +5.7°C), followed by Erode: 42.2°C (+4.1°C), Tirupattur: 41.8°C (+3.9°C), Vellore: 41.6°C (+2.4°C), Tiruchirappalli_AP: 41.3°C (+2.9°C), Salem: 40.8°C (+3.2°C), Madurai_AP: 40.6°C (+2.9°C), Dharmapuri: 40.2°C (+3.3°C), Madurai City: 40.2°C (+2.6°C), Tiruthani: 40.2°C (+1.0°C), Namakkal: 40.0°C, and Thanjavur: 40.0°C.

Temperatures in the remaining interior plains of Tamil Nadu hovered between 38-40°C. Coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, saw temperatures in the range of 35°C to 38°C, while the hilly areas experienced temperatures spanning from 23°C to 30°C.

Chennai registered typical maximum temperatures, with MBK reaching 39.4°C (+2.3°C) and NBK at 36.9°C (+0.8°C).

The weather monitoring agency forecasts that the sky condition in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy. The maximum temperature is likely to range between 38-39°C, while the minimum temperature is anticipated to be around 28-29°C.

Thunderstom & Heatwave Warning
The RMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave at isolated pockets over North Interior Tamil Nadu and predicted thunderstorms with lightning at one or two places over in the state along with Puducherry and Karaikal area.

"Due to humid air & high temperatures, hot & discomfort weather is very likely to
prevail at isolated pockets over rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area," the statement from the weather agency said.

Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts come under the North Interior category.
