Tamil Nadu Weather: TN Set For Heavy Rains Mid-Week; Chennai Expects Light Thunderstorms Today

Chennai is likely to witness light to moderate rains today, while heavy downpours are predicted in parts of Tamil Nadu between July 16 and 20.

In its daily bulletin, the Regional Meteorological Centre has said that Chennai can expect thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain.

As per weather blogger Chennai Rains, the thunderstorms popping up in a few places over the suburbs of the capital city and indicate that the city might witness a sudden burst of Rains. "As of now rains may be isolated so it could be that your area may remain hot and dry while a couple of kms away it might be raining #WxwithCOMK," the message shared on X read.

Earlier on Sunday, parts of Salem, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, the Nilgiris, Tiruvallur, Namakkal, and Erode already experienced rains.

Heavy Rain Alert

The weather agency has issued a heavy rain alert for several districts across Tamil Nadu, with predictions extending from Wednesday through Sunday.

Wednesday: Ghat areas of Coimbatore district, along with Nilgiris, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts, are expected to experience heavy rainfall.

Thursday: The forecast indicates heavy rains for Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, and Kancheepuram districts.

Friday: Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Theni, Tenkasi, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry.

Saturday: Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over the Ghat areas of Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts. Additionally, isolated heavy rain is expected in Theni and Tenkasi districts.

However, on Sunday, Theni and Tenkasi districts are again forecast to receive isolated heavy rainfall.

Temperature Update

In terms of temperatures, Madurai_AP recorded the highest maximum temperature across Tamil Nadu at 40.5°C. Meanwhile, Coimbatore_AP noted the lowest minimum temperature in the plains of Tamil Nadu at 22.0°C.
