Tamil Nadu Weather: Light Rains Likely In Some Dists; Chennai To Get Showers Today

Parts of Tamil Nadu are set to witness another spell of rainfall on Tuesday, with the state capital Chennai also expected to receive light showers. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the prevailing weather pattern continues to favour intermittent rain activity across the state, particularly over southern districts, while isolated rainfall is likely over northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region.

In its latest weather bulletin, the RMC said that "light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places over Tamil Nadu." The statement further noted that rainfall activity is expected to be more widespread over south Tamil Nadu, while north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may see rain at isolated locations. Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in areas where thunderstorms and lightning may occur briefly.

Along with rainfall, a gradual change in temperature conditions is also anticipated over the coming days. The meteorological department stated that there would be no major change in minimum temperatures on Day 1, December 17, though a slight falling tendency is expected. From Day 2, December 18, to Day 5, December 21, minimum temperatures are likely to fall gradually by about 2 to 3 degrees Celsius across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

In terms of deviation from normal temperatures, the RMC explained that minimum temperatures are expected to remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal in a few pockets on Day 1. On Day 2, above-normal minimum temperatures may persist at isolated places. However, from Day 3 onwards, temperatures are forecast to return to normal or dip below normal levels in several parts of the region, indicating slightly cooler nights as the week progresses.

For Chennai, the weather outlook suggests relatively mild conditions accompanied by occasional showers. The city is likely to record a maximum temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to hover between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius. The sky condition over the city is predicted to remain partly cloudy, with light rain likely in some areas. Residents may experience brief spells of drizzle or light showers, especially during the late evening or early morning hours.

Rainfall data recorded over the past 24 hours indicates that several parts of the state have already received significant showers. Kothavacherry in Cuddalore district and Ramnadu KVK AWS in Ramanathapuram district recorded the highest rainfall, with 6 cm each. Close behind were areas such as Kollidam in Mayiladuthurai district, Parangipettai, Lalpet, Annamalai Nagar, and Chidambaram AWS in Cuddalore district, all of which received around 5 cm of rain.

Several other locations across Tamil Nadu recorded moderate rainfall of about 4 cm, including Vadakuthu and K.M. Koil in Cuddalore district, Z-15 Uthandi in Chennai, Thangachimadam and Tondi in Ramanathapuram district, and parts of Chengalpattu such as Satyabama University and VIT Chennai AWS. Areas that received around 3 cm of rainfall include Valasaravakkam, Sholinganallur, Maduravoyal, and Nerkundram in Chennai, along with Rameswaram, Mudukulatur, Chinnakalar, Udumalpet, Velankanni, and several pockets in Cuddalore, Tirunelveli, Perambalur, Villupuram, and Nagapattinam districts.
