Tamil Nadu Weather: IMD Issues Heat, Humidity Warning For Coastal Region, Puducherry

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that soaring temperatures combined with high humidity are likely to cause considerable discomfort across the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

The advisory, released on Thursday, highlights that maximum temperatures are expected to remain above seasonal norms in certain areas, intensifying the heat stress felt by residents.

According to the IMD, isolated parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience temperatures around two degrees Celsius higher than the average for this time of year. On Wednesday, Tiruchirappalli registered the highest maximum temperature in the state, reaching 40.5°C (105°F). In contrast, Ariyalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 24.0°C, while the hill station of Kodaikanal saw a much cooler minimum of 11.7°C.

Despite the oppressive heat, the weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in some areas, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Regional Meteorological Centre has further cautioned that heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations, particularly in districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. These showers may provide temporary relief from the heat but could also bring localised disruption.

The IMD noted that there has been no significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the past 24 hours. While temperatures in most areas remain close to normal, certain pockets continue to experience readings above the seasonal average. This variation underscores the uneven impact of the current weather pattern, with inland districts facing harsher conditions compared to coastal and hill regions.

The combination of high temperature and humidity is particularly concerning for public health, as it can lead to heat-related illnesses and general discomfort. Authorities have advised residents to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and seeking shade during peak afternoon hours. Farmers and outdoor workers are especially vulnerable, given the strenuous nature of their activities under such conditions.

Looking ahead, meteorologists expect the prevailing weather trend to continue over the coming days, with no major changes anticipated in maximum temperatures. The likelihood of thunderstorms and scattered rainfall, however, may offer intermittent respite. The IMD's warnings serve as a reminder of the challenges posed by seasonal extremes in southern India, where the interplay of heat and humidity often creates testing conditions for communities.
