Tamil Nadu Weather: Chennai, Neighbouring Regions To Get Rains Today; 7 Dists On Yellow Alert Tomorrow

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a continuation of isolated thunderstorm activity for several districts in North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today. Concurrently, the state grapples with a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures soaring significantly above seasonal averages.

According to a daily bulletin issued by the RMC, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts, as well as in Puducherry. The Chennai City and parts of the KTCC (Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu) will witness thunderstorm on Tuesday, weather blogger R Pradeep John.

He said in a post on X: "Thunderstorms again possible today in isolated places in North Tamil Nadu in KTCC (Chennai and Surrounding districts), Pondy, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Mayildauthurai, Villupuram. Dry weather to continue in other districts, weather blogger R Pradeep John said in its post."

The forecast follows the development of a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area over the Northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining coasts. The system is projected to move north-northwestwards along the Myanmar-Bangladesh coastlines over the next 24 hours. An additional Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation is present over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Reported

The storm forecast comes amid an intense heat spell across the region. On Monday, maximum temperatures at many observatories in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal were recorded at 2-5°C above normal. Madurai Airport registered the state's highest maximum temperature at 37.6°C. The lowest minimum temperature in the plains was 19.0°C, recorded in Karur Paramathi.

The noted weather blogger confirmed the record-breaking temperatures in a social media post, adding that a slight temperature drop is anticipated today in areas of North Tamil Nadu that receive rainfall.

Outlook for Midweek

Looking ahead, the RMC has issued a warning for heavy rain at isolated places on Wednesday. The affected districts are expected to be Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, and Tiruchirappalli, along with the Karaikal area.
