Coimbatore has been grappling with heavy rainfall over the past two days, disrupting daily life and causing significant flooding across the city. The Ezhu Erumai Pallam Canal near Mathampalayam was particularly hard hit, with reports indicating that two cars were swept away by floodwaters.

Is Relief in Sight for Coimbatore?

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Coimbatore remains under a yellow alert, signaling authorities and residents to stay vigilant. A "yellow" alert advises caution, urging people to stay updated on potential weather-related risks.

On Tuesday, Coimbatore AP recorded 9 cm of rainfall, while Coimbatore AWS and Valparai PAP both saw 7 cm. Periyanaickenpalayam registered 6 cm of rain, and P.N. Palayam ARG received 4 cm.

Impact of the North East Monsoon

The North East Monsoon has unleashed torrential rains in Coimbatore. The heavy rains have causes severe waterlogging on major roads, including those near Coimbatore Railway Station, Hospital Road, Sungam, Race Course, and Avinashi Road.

Key areas such as the Lanka Corner Railway Bridge, the lower section of the Avinashi Road old flyover, and the North Coimbatore Flyover have been submerged, leading to the closure of the Sivananda Colony Railway Tunnel. This has resulted in traffic disruptions and hazardous conditions for motorists, according to DT Next.

Rising Water Levels in Lakes and Ponds

The relentless rainfall has caused a surge in the water flow of the Noyal River, filling 24 ponds, including Ukkulam Lake, Narasampathi Lake, Perur Periyakulam, and Ukkadam Periyakulam, along with their connected channels. Wells and barrages in areas such as Thudiyalur, Thadagam, and Thondamuthur are also rapidly filling, heightening the risk of further flooding.
