Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: Heavy Rains To Lash 22 Districts For Next 72 Hours, Chennai To Get Light Showers

Twenty-two districts across Tamil Nadu will get heavy receives for the next 72 hours, according to the Regional Meteorological Department (RMD).

The RMD has issued a red alert to four districts. "Isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Kanyakumari, Theni, Tirunelveli
and Tenkasi districts," the statement from the weather monitoring agency said.

A red alert is issued when extremely severe weather conditions are expected to disrupt travel and power, posing a significant risk to life.

Virudhunagar, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Dindigul districts have been given orange alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rain for the next 72 hours.

An orange alert serves as a warning of extremely severe weather with the potential to disrupt commutes, including road and rail closures, and cause power supply interruptions.

The weather-monitoring agency has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain at isolated places over Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Sivaganga, Thoothukudi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli and Pudukkottai districts and Karaikal area.

A yellow alert indicates severely bad weather over several days, suggesting the possibility of worsening conditions that could disrupt daily activities.

The situation is expected to remain more or less the same till May 23.

During the 24-hour period ending at 08:30 today, maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal were below normal in some places, appreciably below normal in others, and normal in a few areas. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Erode at 38.4°C.

In north interior Tamil Nadu, maximum temperatures ranged from 32°C to 39°C, while in south interior Tamil Nadu, they ranged from 31°C to 32°C. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal saw temperatures between 29°C and 32°C, and hilly areas recorded temperatures between 19°C and 27°C.

Chennai experienced below-normal maximum temperatures, with MBK recording 35.7°C (-2.7°C) and NBK recording 34.9°C (-2.5°C).

The Tamil Nadu capital is predicted to get light to moderate rain for the next seven days. The RMD reports that Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies. Light The maximum temperature is expected to be between 34°C and 35°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to range from 26°C to 27°C.
