Tamil Nadu Weather: 16 Dists On Yellow Alert; Chennai, KTCC To Get Surprise Showers

Sixteen districts in Tamil Nadu are on yellow alert today as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasts heavy rainfall, signaling a active weather pattern across the state.

Affected Districts:

The alert covers a wide swath of the state, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, and Tiruvannamalai.

The RMC bulletin attributes the weather to an "Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation" persisting over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Tamil Nadu coast.

Chennai Forecast:

For Chennai, the forecast suggests one or two spells of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning. The city is expected to see maximum temperatures around 32-33°C.

Echoing this, popular weather blogger R Pradeep John stated that the Chennai region (KTCC) can expect "surprise showers popping up out of nowhere." He added that southern districts like Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Virudhunagar are also in for significant rainfall.

The weather blogger wrote, "Another rocking day ahead for Interior Tamil Nadu, but this time South TN joins the party. Districts like Kanyakumari, Thenkasi, Theni, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, and interior Thoothukudi will get their share of good rains today.KTCC (Chennai) - the same story continues! Sudden, surprise showers popping up out of nowhere in a few spots, its our trademark transition season pattern."

Looking Ahead: A Grand Entry for Monsoon

A major shift is on the horizon for coastal areas. John predicts that from October 15th or 16th, the easterlies will take charge, leading to the "grand entry" of widespread monsoon rains in the Chennai region.

He continued, "But get ready, KTCC (Chennai) - From October 15/16th onwards, the easterlies will start to take charge, and widespread rains will make a grand entry with onset of monsoon. South Kerala districts will have very good day today."
