Tamil Nadu Weather: 16 Districts Under Yellow Alert, Chennai To Get Light Rains Today
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for 16 districts and Tamil Nadu's capital is expected to get moderate rains on Saturday.
Dists On Yellow Alert
Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts and Karaikal area are predicted to get heavy rain today.

The weather agency has predicted thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain for Chennai. Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvannamalai districts are already witnessed intense thunderstorms on Saturday noon.
"Light to moderate #Rains approaching parts of #Chennai suburbs. At times it could be heavy as the storms move through the city. The deepening of the UAC clearly shows convection strengthening over the Bay," weather blogger Chennai Rains said in a post.
The weather agency, in its daily bulletin, noted that the maximum Temperature is likely to be generally normal to below normal during on Saturday and thereafter below normal by 2-4°C at a few pockets on Sunday to Wednesday over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

"Chennai chances too, will increase as the UAC comes closer. Note Chennai rarely gets rains in May month from thunderstorms, even a light rains is a blessing for us. We will surely get more rains this may. The rainfall recorded till 8.30 am on 17.05.2025 in Manual RG and Automatic RG in Tamil Nadu are enclosed," talking about Chennai weather, weather blogger R Pradeep John said in a post on social media.
Next 2 Days Weather
On Sunday, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts are likely to get rains. Whereas on Monday, Nilgiris, Ghat areas of Coimbatore, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Kallakurichi and Tiruchirappalli districts are expected to get heavy rains.
On Friday, Chengam (dist Tiruvannamalai) got 10 cms rains followed by 7 cms in Krishnagiri (dist Krishnagiri), Jamunamarathur (dist Tiruvannamalai), Hogenekal (dist Dharmapuri), Pelandurai (dist Cuddalore), and Pambar Dam (dist Krishnagiri).
However, Erode recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.2°C over Tamil Nadu. Adirampattinam recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 21.2°C in the plains of
the state.
