Tamil Nadu Warns Private Schools Against Excess Fee Collection, Says Recognition May Be Cancelled

Tamil Nadu has ordered all recognised private schools to follow government-approved fee limits or risk losing recognition. The School Education Department said institutions found collecting excess or concealed charges would face strict action, and urged parents to report violations through official channels for prompt inquiry and penalty.

The directive covers schools preparing to reopen on June 4, and also applies to government institutions. Officials said any private school charging more than the fee approved or nominated by authorities could have its official recognition cancelled, which would affect the school’s legal status and operations.

Authorities explained that the warning is supported by the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Amendment Act. Under this law, a designated committee, made up of senior government officials and education experts, decides the standard fee structure that private educational institutions in the state must follow.

As part of the same order, all private schools must now display tuition fee details fixed by the government on notice boards within their campuses. The government wants these displays to help parents clearly see the approved charges and compare them with what institutions actually demand during admission.

Officials stated that more than 13,000 private schools currently operate with recognition from the Tamil Nadu government. These schools have been told not to collect any “hidden” admission charges or extra payments that go beyond the approved limit, especially at the time of new admissions or renewals.

The School Education Department said the latest push follows several complaints about private schools collecting large sums, above the amounts set by the government. These grievances highlighted issues such as additional admission payments, unexplained development fees and other charges that were not part of the notified structure.

Parents have been encouraged to lodge complaints with the concerned officials whenever they notice fee collection beyond the fixed norms. Authorities have assured that each complaint will be examined, and serious action will follow against schools found breaking the rules, with the initiative expected to curb excessive or hidden fees through closer monitoring.
