Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka Ferry Service Launched: Ticket Price For Boat Service, Distance, Route, Timings & More

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the launch of ferry services between Nagapattinam, India and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka will enhance connectivity, promote trade and reinforce the longstanding bonds between the two countries.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister remarked that India and Sri Lanka are embarking on a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations and the launch of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai is an important milestone in strengthening the relations.

Underlining the shared history of culture, commerce and civilization between India and Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister pointed out that Nagapattinam and nearby towns have been known for sea trade with many countries including Sri Lanka and the historical port of Poompuhar finds a mention as a hub in ancient Tamil literature.

He also spoke about Sangam age literature like Pattinappalai and Manimekalai which describe the movement of boats and ships between the two countries. He also touched upon the great poet Subramania Bharti's song 'Sindhu Nadhiyin Misai', which mentions a bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka. He further added that the ferry service brings alive all those historical and cultural connections.

The ferry underwent a trial run on October 8, during which officials inspected and ensured the safety and comfort of passengers traveling by sea.

Discussions about enhancing connectivity and restarting ferry services between the two nations were conducted virtually by the India-Sri Lanka Joint Committee on July 14 this year, as stated in a press release by the High Commission of India, Colombo.

Established under the MOU on Passenger Transportation by Sea, the India-Sri Lanka Joint Committee had fruitful discussions primarily focused on recommencing ferry services between mutually agreed points of the two countries. Both parties agreed that reinstating ferry services would significantly enhance regional trade and tourism, fostering stronger people-to-people ties, as mentioned in the press release.

What Is The Ticket Price?

The price of a ticket per person is Rs 7,670 including 18 per cent GST. Without the GST, the price of each ticket is Rs 6500, as per the officials of the Nagapattinam Shipping Harbour Department. A total of 150 passengers can travel on the ferry.

Inaugural Offer

However, tickets are being sold at 75 per cent lesser rate the authorities are fixed Rs 2375 including GST per ticket as the inaugural offer. Till Thursday, 30 people had booked tickets, according to a report in ANI.

Distance And Journey

The Sri Lankan Gangesan Port is situated 60 nautical miles away from Nagai Port, and it takes approximately 3.30 hours to reach it by boat. It requires 6,000 liters of fuel.
