Tamil Nadu School Reopening Date: Will Summer Holidays Be Extended This Year For Students?
The summer vacation for the schools in Tamil Nadu is likely to end in about just two weeks. For most classes, the holidays began on April 25, following the completion of exams.
As per the Tamil Nadu government, it has plans to reopen the schools on June 2. However, the heatwave might possibly force the authorities to extend the summer holidays.

What Education Minister Say?
Speaking to reporters recently,Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, "As already announced, schools are scheduled to reopen on June 2. We are still holding that position. However, the Climate Management Committee operating under the Chief Minister's Office is monitoring the heat conditions. The final decision on reopening will be based on their recommendations."
He further added, "If the heatwave intensifies this year, we will act on the instructions of the Climate Management Committee in the best interest of students."
Early Monsoon
However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an early arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala by May 27. Usually, it arrives over Kerala around June 1, which is considered the official onset date for the Indian monsoon season.
However, it is arriving early. Tamil Nadu, being adjacent to Kerala and located on the southeastern coast, usually receives the southwest monsoon rains shortly after the onset in Kerala.
The first spell of monsoon showers in Tamil Nadu-particularly in coastal areas including Chennai. This early monsoon makes a heatwave-induced vacation extension seem improbable. However, the possibility of heavy rains leading to government-declared holidays remains.
A definitive announcement on school reopening is expected by the end of May.
This year, the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu, conducted the Class 12 board exams from March 3 to March 25, covering core subjects in Mathematics, Science, Commerce, and Humanities. Class 11 exams were held from March 5 to March 27, and Class 10 SSLC written exams took place from March 28 to April 15, following the completion of practical assessments.
The SSLC and HSC+1 results were declared on May 16. Whereas the Plus 2 results were announced on May 8.
