Tamil Nadu School Reopening Date: When Will Schools Reopen - June 1 or 4?

Across Tamil Nadu, families have been holding their breath. For weeks, a single question has echoed through households, from Chennai to Madurai: when will the classrooms finally hum with life again?

Two dates have danced in public discourse - one carrying the promise of an early start, the other whispering of a slower, more deliberate return. The education department has kept everyone guessing, until now.

Behind closed doors, Minister for School Education Rajmohan convened a crucial review meeting on 18 May 2026. Alongside Additional Chief Secretary Chandramohan and senior officials, he pored over every detail: new textbooks, teacher training, and the delicate machinery of reopening. Outside, parents checked calendars. Inside, a decision crystallised.

But then came a twist. The Minister announced that not all children would return on the same day. Young learners in Grades 1 through 3 would have to wait a little longer - their teachers needed three extra days to master a brand-new curriculum designed to unlock creativity, motor skills, and emotional growth. Nine vibrant textbooks, rich with stories and songs, stood ready. Yet the exact date for everyone else remained tantalisingly unconfirmed.

And now, the revelation. After weeks of speculation, Minister Rajmohan has confirmed that State Board schools across Tamil Nadu will reopen for the majority of students on 1 June 2026. The earlier rumoured date of 4 June has been set aside, advanced to give older children an earlier start.

However, to ensure quality, students in Grades 1 through 3 will still begin on 4 June, following three days of intensive teacher training from 1 to 3 June. Meanwhile, Class 10 results will arrive as scheduled on 20 May, and textbooks for Grades 1 to 12 will be distributed on day one.

The bells will ring on 1 June. But for the youngest, patience will be rewarded just three days later.
