Tamil Nadu School Reopen Date: When Will Classes Begin For Classes 1 to 10?
Recent reports had suggested possible delays in the resumption of classes due to extreme weather conditions. Initially, concerns were raised over the ongoing heatwave, followed by apprehensions about the early arrival of the monsoon impacting academic schedules.
However, with temperatures showing a gradual decline, authorities have confirmed that schools will resume operations as originally planned. The summer vacation, which began on April 25 for most institutions following the conclusion of examinations, is set to end on June 1.

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi recently addressed the situation, stating, "As previously announced, schools are expected to reopen on June 2. We are maintaining this schedule for now, but the Climate Management Committee under the Chief Minister's Office is closely monitoring weather conditions. Any final decision will be based on their guidance."
He further emphasized, "Should the heatwave worsen, we will follow the committee's recommendations to ensure the safety and well-being of students."
Early Monsoon Arrival Raises Questions
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an early onset of the southwest monsoon, expected to reach Kerala by May 27-several days ahead of the usual June 1 timeline. Given Tamil Nadu's proximity to Kerala, the state typically experiences monsoon rains shortly after their arrival in the neighboring region.
When questioned about the potential impact of the northeast monsoon, B. Amudha, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre, clarified that the performance of the northeast monsoon cannot be predicted based on the southwest monsoon's behaviour.
"The normal onset date for the southwest monsoon is June 1, but this year, it arrived on May 24-significantly earlier than usual," Amudha explained. "Historical data shows a similar early onset in 2009. However, we cannot yet draw conclusions about the northeast monsoon. We will continue monitoring and issue long-range forecasts accordingly."
Examination Schedule and Results
This academic year, the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE) conducted board exams for Class 12 from March 3 to March 25, covering key subjects across various streams. Class 11 exams were held from March 5 to March 27, while Class 10 SSLC written exams took place between March 28 and April 15, following practical assessments.
The results for SSLC and HSC+1 were declared on May 16, while Plus 2 results were announced earlier on May 8. With the academic calendar proceeding as planned, students and parents await further updates on any weather-related adjustments.
