According to the weather agency, Tamil Nadu is expected to experience intense heat between June 1 and June 4, with temperatures likely to ease only after June 4. In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the School Education Department has sought the views from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding possible heatwave-like conditions during the first week of June.

School Education Minister Rajmohan on Monday said discussions would be held with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on whether the reopening of schools should be deferred. The statement comes amid growing demands from school associations and education activists urging the government to postpone reopening from June 1 to June 8 to safeguard students from the summer heat.

Despite the ongoing discussions, parents, students and educational institutions across Tamil Nadu have been advised to follow the existing academic calendar and remain prepared for schools to reopen on June 1 unless an official announcement is issued.

"A decision on this will be made soon," the minister told reporters after distributing appointment orders to six teachers recruited through the Teachers Recruitment Board.

The minister also highlighted several initiatives planned for the upcoming academic year. He said newly introduced textbooks for Classes 1 to 3 now carry child helpline numbers on the opening pages to create awareness among students. In addition, schools will conduct debates, special sessions and orientation programmes aimed at promoting scientific temper among children.

Addressing concerns raised by part-time and secondary grade teachers, who staged statewide protests earlier this year, Rajmohan said a special grievance meeting would be organised to compile and review their demands, including long-pending vacancies in elementary and middle schools.

"We will assess what can be done in each case. Some demands involve administrative issues while others are legal in nature. We will compile the concerns and work towards teachers' welfare. This government stands by students, teachers and parents, in that order," he said.

Last year, schools in Tamil Nadu reopened on June 2 following the summer vacation.
