Tamil Nadu Rains: Is It A Holiday For Schools On Nov 24 In 15 Dists On Monday?

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall across 15 districts of Tamil Nadu today, with four southern districts placed under an orange alert as weather systems intensify over the Bay of Bengal and the Comorin region.

According to the RMC, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts are on orange alert, signalling the likelihood of very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and the Karaikal region have been placed under a yellow alert.

Weather Systems Strengthening Over the Bay of Bengal

In its daily bulletin, the weather agency detailed the evolving systems driving the rainfall activity:

• The Low Pressure Area over the Strait of Malacca and South Andaman Sea strengthened into a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area early today and continues to persist over the same region.
• This system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression on November 24, before further strengthening into a Cyclonic Storm over the Southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours.
• Another Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation over the Comorin region persists and may form a new Low Pressure Area over Comorin and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka around November 25.
• Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea continues to prevail.

Heavy Rainfall Expected on Monday as Well

Based on current projections, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai districts and Karaikal are likely to receive heavy rains again on Monday.

Rainfall Highlights

Several locations recorded intense rainfall in the last 24 hours:

• Nalumukku (Tirunelveli) topped the chart with 26 cm,
• Followed by Oothu (Tirunelveli) with 25 cm,
• Kakkachi (Tirunelveli) 23 cm,
• Manjolai (Tirunelveli) 21 cm.

Significant rainfall was also reported in Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Cuddalore districts, including:

• Tiruchendur and Kulasekarapattinam - 13 cm,
• Kayathar - 11 cm,
• Kayalpattinam - 10 cm,
• Satankulam, Ayikudi, Shencottah - 9 cm each,
• Multiple stations in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Cuddalore - 7-8 cm each.

Temperature Update

• Erode and Madurai airports recorded the highest maximum temperature at 32.0°C.
• Karur Paramathi registered the lowest minimum temperature at 20.0°C in the plains.

Will Schools and Colleges Be Closed on Monday?

With 15 districts experiencing heavy rains today and 11 districts forecast to receive heavy rainfall on Monday, parents and students are anxiously waiting for clarity on school and college holidays.

As of now, it has been announced that the educational institutions in Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Kallakurichi, Ramanathapuram, Puducherry, Puducherry, Virudhunagar, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur and Karur districts will remain closed.
