Tamil Nadu School Holiday List For October: Schools To Remain Closed For 17 Days In Total
In October, students in Tamil Nadu will have plenty of time to enjoy the festive season and relax, as schools will be closed for 17 days.
The break comes after a busy period of quarterly exams, which started on September 19 for classes 11 and 12, and on September 20 for students in classes 6 to 10. By September 27, all exams were completed, and the much-anticipated quarterly holiday officially began on September 28.

Initially, students were scheduled to have just five days off, with schools reopening on October 3. However, in response to requests from both students and teachers, the school education department decided to extend the break by four more days. This means that students will now enjoy a total of nine days off, returning to school on October 7.
- Schools Reopening Date: October 7
- Classes: October 7-10
- Holidays: October 11-13 (Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja)
- Classes: October 14-18, October 21-25, October 28-30
- Diwali Holiday: October 31
October is shaping up to be a particularly short month in terms of school days, as it is filled with public holidays and long weekends. Key holidays include Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Ayudha Puja on October 11, Saraswati Puja on October 12, and Diwali on October 31.
With weekends and these public holidays, schools will only be open for 17 days in the entire month.
In fact, for the 2024-25 academic year, the total number of school working days has come down to 210 from 220. This change was made in response to feedback from teachers and students, and the adjustments are largely due to the timing of quarterly exams, which coincided with weekends and government holidays in September and October. The extended holiday period is a welcome break, giving students more time to recharge before they return to their studies.
