Pongal Holiday 2025: In a festive move, the Tamil Nadu government has extended the Pongal holidays, offering its employees, teachers, students, and their families a six-day break to celebrate the traditional harvest festival. Yes, it will be a six-day holiday in the state, this year for the harvest festival.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that January 17 (Friday) will be an additional public holiday, enabling people to enjoy a longer celebration and spend time with their loved ones in their hometowns. However, to compensate, Saturday (January 25) will be a working day for all government departments, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and educational institutions.

Pongal Holiday Schedule:
January 14-16 (Tuesday to Thursday): Pre-scheduled Pongal holidays.
January 17 (Friday): Newly declared public holiday.
January 18-19 (Saturday and Sunday): Weekend holidays.
This extended Pongal break ensures six continuous days of festivities, much to the delight of students, parents, government employees, and teachers. If people apply holiday on Monday (January 13), it will be a nine-day holiday considering January 11 is a second Saturday and January 12 is a Sunday.
The decision to extend the holiday was made following appeals from government employees, including teachers' associations and employees' unions.
Thiyagarajan, coordinator of JACTO-GEO, emphasized the cultural importance of Pongal and how the additional time off would benefit families travelling to their native places.
Speaking on the matter, Thiyagarajan stated, "Pongal is a time for families to come together and celebrate the harvest. This extended break will allow everyone to participate in the traditions and festivities with ease." He also mentioned that a formal request for the additional holiday was planned for early January 2025, reflecting the collective sentiment of many in the state.
Enabling Family Celebrations
The Tamil Nadu government's thoughtful move underscores its commitment to preserving cultural traditions and ensuring that people can enjoy Pongal without time constraints.
